capracare, a nonprofit in Haiti takes the lead to prevent Covid-19
capracare, a 501(c)(3) organization which provides comprehensive access to health services, professional development, and educational services to the families of the Fonfrede, Les Cayes community has now taken the lead to help stop the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Located on the outskirts of the city of Les Cayes and 4 hours from Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, where all the major governmental bodies and infrastructures are centralized, the 20,000 population of Fonfrede has had persistent, across the board health issues like many rural areas in Haiti.
capracare currently stands as the only Haitian led non-governmental grassroots organization to present preventative measures to stop the spread of the new devastating life threatening pandemic known as the COVID-19.
The organization has established the capracare COVID-19 Response which includes a COVID-19 Action Plan that features 3 main phases: Planning and Prevention, Pandemic Response, Post-Pandemic and a dedicated COVID-19 Pandemic Relief Fund which would help mitigate potential damages caused by the novel coronavirus as well as implementing a strategic plan for recovery and other imminent health issues that can affect the greater Les Cayes, Haiti.
The organization has been focusing on raising awareness prior to any officially known Covid-19 cases in Haiti by providing health education and creating emergency hygiene kits. “Being aware that the community of Fonfrede lacks access and funds to basic hygiene necessities, capracare’s staff and Community Health Workers are trained to make hand soap and sanitizers which are essential to help prevent the spread of COVID-19″ said Jean Pierre-Louis, Founder, President & Chief Executive Officer of capracare.
The organization is also taking on the challenge of teaching the community about the importance of social distancing and the preventative measures they need to take to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus.
